Hopkins County Jail to Replace Potentially Dangerous Equipment

The Hopkins County Jail will receive half a million dollars in credit for the replacement of outdated and potentially dangerous heating and air units.

The County Fiscal Court approved the deal this week that establishes a credit facility with the Kentucky Association of Counties to cover the bill.

The situation had been declared an emergency prior to the decision.

Manufacturer Trane will provide more than 20 new units to replace the 15-year-old machines.

Hopkins County Jailer Joe Blue says the deal comes out much cheaper and safer in the long run when compared to the $60,000 the county spent on upkeep this year.

"We’ve been working with Trane for the last several months trying to keep them working, and finally we’ve exhausted everything," Blue said.

"There were some concerns about the stability of the units and the safety of those units, continuing in operation as they are."

Blue says installation should begin within the next two to three months. Currently, the county jail hosts nearly 400 inmates.
