Holliday's Plans for Race-to-the-Top Funds

By Gary Pitts

Frankfort, KY – As a part of the federal Race-to-the-Top program, Kentucky will be receiving around $17 million dollars over the next four years to invest in education. The federal government requires that half be spent at the state level, and the other be doled out at the local level. But State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says his department is working with individual school districts so that most of the money goes to teacher and administrator support.

"Our teachers need a lot of support with these new common core standards, and new assessments, and new accountability systems. So we're trying to get all the money to go to help classroom teachers."

Holliday says around $500,000 dollars will be used in the Advance Kentucky program to help improve advanced placement, or AP, courses throughout the state. Holliday spoke this morning at a press conference at Murray Elementary School.
