A group petitioning for an independent commission to draw legislative districts in Illinois turned in signatures Friday. Leaders of the Independent Map coalition delivered over 550,000 signatures to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

The minimum number needed is 290,216, but the signatures still need to be verified.

The group is asking voters to approve the change this November. The once-a-decade mapping process is controlled by the political party in power.

Independent Map supporters say elections would be more competitive if the process was out of lawmakers' hands. But opponents succeeded in blocking a past effort in court.

A legislative proposal to create an independent commission was unsuccessful this year. The plan by state Rep. Jack Franks was approved in the House but failed in the Senate.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
