Green Party Candidate Files to Run Against State Rep. Lynn Bechler

A write-in candidate has emerged in the race for the 4th District Kentucky House seat, currently held by Republican state Rep. Lynn Bechler.

Grand Rivers resident Don Ellis announced he has filed to run as a Green Party candidate. Ellis is the founder of the Green Party Radio Network and says he is running on the party’s four key principles of ecological wisdom, social justice, grassroots democracy and nonviolence.

Ellis says, if elected, his first action in Frankfort would be to fight for a $10 an hour minimum wage that would increase $1 a year until the state minimum wage is $13 an hour. Kentucky's minimum wage is currently $7.25/hour. He also says he would be an advocate for more union jobs and would vote against right-to-work legislation. Ellis is also in favor of legalizing marijuana.

Bechler is running for his third term representing the 4th District, comprised of Caldwell, Crittenden, Livingston and part of Christian counties. No Democrats filed to run for the seat this year.

John Null is the host and creator of Left of the Dial. From 2013-2016, he also served as a reporter in the WKMS newsroom.
