Despite Governor Matt Bevin’s plans for wide ranging cuts to the state budget, expansion may be on the horizon for U.S. Highway 641 South in Calloway County.
Bevin’s proposed budget and includes a funding increase for the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority and mentions that his road plan proposes to complete the widening of the two-lane portion of U.S. 641 to the Tennessee Border.
"The first project is about a mile-long project from the end of the four lane now and it runs down to the Clarks River bridge," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd. "It will be about $8.1 million for that section, and then there is design money for the remainder of the section from that bridge down to the Kentucky-Tennessee state line of about $3 million for 2016. It has right-of-way in 2018, with utilities in 2019, which bring an estimated construction time somewhere around 2021. The total for all that is about $68 million for that section, which is about 6.6 miles."
Todd says contracted appraisers have been talking with property owners about the 23 parcels of land for the first segment.
Bevin’s budget also accelerates the planning phase of the I-69 Henderson-Evansville Ohio River Bridge and future I-69 tie-in projects.
The plans also must pass through the legislature.
