Fulton Man Raising Money for New Amtrak Station

A Fulton man is leading a fundraising campaign to replace the city’s aging train station. The town is home to far western Kentucky’s only Amtrak stop.

Jeff Campbell says he’s raised half of the projected $60,000 cost in private donations and is seeking $20,000 in funding from the city, county, and tourism commission combined, and another $10,000 in community support. Campbell says Fulton should “put its best foot forward” with the new facility in order to leave visitors with a good impression of the town.

“There is nothing in that station in terms of a map or even directions in terms of how to get downtown. We need to do that. We need to have frame boards on the walls that show all of our businesses downtown, our restaurants. That is an opportunity to truly promote tourism in Fulton that we’ve not taken advantage of in the past.”

Campbell says the new facility will reflect the area’s rail heritage.

He says Amtrak is supportive of the building and has offered to clear the old trailer that has served as the station since 1973. Campbell’s Twin Cities Restoration Foundation will construct the building and then deed it over to the City of Fulton. Amtrak will be responsible for operating and maintaining the facility.

Campbell is kicking off a six week fund-drive this week.
