Former Kentucky 6th District U.S. Rep Won't Rule Out Return to Politics

Matt Markgraf / WKMS

Former Kentucky 6th District U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler says he still hasn’t ruled out a return to politics.

Chandler held that seat from 2004 to 2012 before losing a re-election bid to Republican Andy Barr.

Chandler, a Democrat, now serves as executive Director of the Kentucky Humanities Council. He says he doesn’t have any current plans but would consider the right opportunity.

“I’ve done my time, to some extent. I’ve spent 21 years in public office, fairly high elected public office," Chandler said. "So, I’m enjoying the Humanities Council tremendously.”

Chandler joined the nonprofit in 2013, and hasn’t run for public office since then. He says there could be another race left in him, but for now he’s focused on the Council.

"For a guy like me who loves Kentucky history, I get to peddle Kentucky history across this state and I love that," Chandler said. "It'd have to be a pretty good and exciting opportunity for me to leave what I'm doing."

Todd Hatton hails from Paducah, Kentucky, where he got into radio under the auspices of the late, great John Stewart of WKYX while a student at Paducah Community College. He also worked at WKMS in the reel-to-reel tape days of the early 1990s before running off first to San Francisco, then Orlando in search of something to do when he grew up. He received his MFA in Creative Writing at Murray State University. He vigorously resists adulthood and watches his wife, Angela Hatton, save the world one plastic bottle at a time.
