EKU Regents Discuss Funding Cuts in Special Session

Eastern Kentucky University’s Board of Regents met in special session Wednesday to consider, among other items, state funding cuts to education.

Following a lengthy closed-door “executive session,” Board Chair Craig Turner announced the formation of two committees to evaluate the school’s academic programs in light of the reduced funding.  An Academic Budget-Review Committee is working in conjunction with a Student/Staff committee.

EKU President Michael Benson says any cuts would be delayed until a full assessment of programs under consideration, “Not to postpone the pain, like Craig said, we’re not trying to do that, but we can be methodical, we can be careful, we can be informed. That’s what we intend to do.”

As announced in an email to faculty and staff earlier this week, programs under consideration include EKU’S Bachelors' in French, Horticulture, and Geography.

More discussion of the reduction process is expected at the Board of Regents meeting on June 20th.
