Education Commissioner Comments on Teacher Evaluation Overhaul

By Gary Pitts

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's legislative education committee passed a teacher evaluation overhaul bill yesterday. House Bill 40 would make evaluations the responsibility of the state Department of Education rather than each individual school district. Part of the bill would bring student performance into evaluations, which teachers' unions disagree with. State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says the inclusion of student performance is not the overall purpose of the bill.

"While the system may have a small component tied to student learning, it's just a small component of the overall system. The system is more about supporting teachers and giving them professional growth opportunities."

Holliday says he hopes to have all of the details of an overhaul finalized in the next three to four months. Holliday commented this morning at a press conference at Murray Elementary School.
