Dunbar Cave Closed

By Chris Taylor

Clarksville, TN – Tennessee State Park officials have closed Clarksville's Dunbar Cave to the public after a bat was discovered with signs of white nose syndrome. However, one researcher tells the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle the infected bat may not be part of the established colony. Austin Peay State University Professor Andy Barrass says there's an indicator the infected bat was a migrant and was found about 500 yards in from the entrance of the cave. The white nose syndrome disease causes bats to rapidly use their fat reserves while hibernating and often starve to death.
