The U.S. Department of Energy has extended the contract for cleanup efforts at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The contract for BWXT Conversion Services was set to expire Friday.
The nearly $36 million extension, which also includes the Portsmouth, Ohio location, is intended to avoid interruption in services.
The contractor is operating facilities to convert depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) to a more stable uranium oxide for reuse or disposal.
In both locations the plants are converting the DOE’s more than 700,000 metric tons of DUF6 left over from decades of uranium enrichment.
New Contract Awarded:
The DOE also awarded a contract Thursday to Mid-American Conversion Services for the Paducah and Portsmouth plants, for a total value of $318,811,847 over a five-year period. Services under this contract provide surveillance and maintenance over the facilities and equipment. Some management functions will be performed in Lexington.
