A Democrat has announced his candidacy in the race to succeed Kentucky’s retiring 1st District U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield.
Sam Gaskins is holding an official announcement event Monday at noon at Hopkinsville’s Pennyroyal Arts Council headquarters. Gaskins is an Army veteran who served eight years before receiving a medical retirement in 2009.
Gaskins joins Republicans Jason Batts, James Comer and Michael Pape in the race. Another Democrat, state Sen. Dorsey Ridley of Henderson says he’s strongly considering a bid but has not yet formally announced his intentions.
Candidates from major parties have until January 26 to file for May’s primary.
