Datebook: May 17 - Watergate Hearings Air on TV 40 Years Ago

There have certainly been no shortage of political scandals in Washington, but there has only been one that led to the resignation of a US President. Beginning on this day in 1973, major television networks took turns airing the hearings, starting with ABC. An estimated 85% of Americans tuned in to at least one hearing.

It’s Friday, May 17

There’s a free youth baseball clinic at Brooks Stadium in Paducah on Sunday for kids ages 6-16. Kids can get tips on hitting, throwing, and fielding. The first 100 participants get free T-shirts. Registration begins at noon with the clinic starting at 1.

The Pennyroyal Arts Council and the Hopkinsville Art Guild are producing an alphabet book titled "H is for Hopkinsville." A community-wide contest for each alphabet letter runs through June 15. Choose a letter for a site or event that relates to Hopkinsville and, in 45 words or less, write about your topic. Submit entries to paci@bellsouth.net.

The Run for Life 5K, benefiting Lifehouse Care Center of Murray, is next Saturday, May 25, beginning at 8AM at 602 Poplar. Pre-register at murrayrunforlife.com or pick up a registration form from the center. Race-day registration starts at 7AM. For more information, call 270-753-0700.
