Comer Leads Gaskins in 1st District Fundraising

The latest fundraising totals in the race to become the next Representative of Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District show Republican James Comer with a large lead over his Democratic opponent, Sam Gaskins.

Comer has taken in $826,099 in receipts, including a $100,000 candidate loan during the Republican primary. Gaskins, an Army veteran from Hopkinsville, has netted $6,035 in total receipts, with less than $200 cash-on-hand according to the latest quarterly report from the Federal Election Commission. Comer had more than $66,000 cash-on-hand at the end of June.

The former state agriculture commissioner’s war chest includes large gifts from corporations and organizations like the NRA, Microsoft, Alliance Coal, Arch Coal, Armstrong Coal, Aetna, Humana, Pfizer, the Ford Motor Company, Yum! Brands Inc.  and tobacco giant Altria.

Terry McIntosh of Paducah is also running as a write-in candidate. The winner in November will succeed retiring Congressman Ed Whitfield.
