Coal Plans Revived in McCracken County

By Angela Hatton

Paducah, KY – A company has revived the possibility of a rail-to-barge coal terminal and coal-to-liquid fuel plant in McCracken County. Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton tells the Paducah Sun the talks are preliminary and he doesn't know the names of the companies involved. The McCracken County Fiscal Court discussed the issue in executive session Monday night, and Judge Executive Van Newberry declined to comment on the details. Plans for a similar project failed in 2008 when the fiscal court denied a request to rezone about 300 acres in West Paducah from "rural residential" to "light industry." Paxton says the plant could employ up to 120 people, but local residents oppose construction. Paducah & Louisville Railway officials also oppose the project, saying it would cut into their coal transport business.
