Democratic senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes joined United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil Roberts at a rally with the AFL-CIO in Madisonville today in support of her campaign.
The UMWA believes Grimes will support the health and safety of coal miners. AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler says the goal was to generate excitement and increase voter turnout ahead of next week’s election. Shuler says Grimes has the support of both organizations for her stance on women’s issues, the minimum wage, and especially the protection of coal miners.
“The stark difference between the two candidates when it comes to health and safety and certainly making sure folks in the coal industry who are suffering from black lung are protected and that they get the benefits they deserve," Shuler said. "And we think Alison Lundergan Grimes will be that watchdog and that protector in Washington.”
Grimes will join Cecil Roberts for another UMWA rally in Pikeville tomorrow.
