Officials at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond, Wednesday, staged a simulated chemical accident.

It’s part of the annual exercise which involves emergency response officials in ten Kentucky Counties.

The yearly exercise takes on added significance as preparations continue for neutralization of chemical agents stored at the Madison County army installation.  While disposal of nerve agent is not scheduled to start until 2020, work to destroy mustard agent is set to start next year.

Activities occur in ten counties surrounding the depot.  In Lexington, emergency management officials along with public safety, health and medical, transportation, and social service representatives conducted a disaster exercise at Jacobson Park.

An alert message also went out to students and staff at Eastern Kentucky University.
