Casey County Clerk Casey Davis is six days into a bicycle ride across Kentucky in support of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who has defied several legal orders to issue marriage licenses since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

During a break from his bike ride this afternoon near Elizabethtown, Casey Davis said he would like to see the issuing of marriage licenses taken out of the hands of county clerks and put into the hands of the person officiating at the wedding.

“I think it’s simple," said Davis. "People can go to their county. Get the license. Bring it back to their county, record the license, just like always. There’s one step that’s left out and that’s the issuing officer and that’s taken care of by the person solemnizing the wedding.”

Davis said he talked with Kim Davis by phone this morning and his bicycle ride is even more important now that the Supreme Court has ordered her to issue the marriage licenses.  The two are not related.

Casey Davis said he would like see the person performing the marriage ceremony responsible for issuing the license.

"They already have to sign in two different places, the person who performs the marriage and the state would be out of the marriage license issuing business and Kim Davis is able to do her job without having to be in violation of her conscience," said Davis.

Casey Davis left Pikeville in the eastern part of Kentucky on Thursday and is hoping to be at his destination in Paducah by Friday evening.
