The Calloway County Board of Education is moving forward with outsourcing some custodial staff in the district.
The district’s budget committee floated the move earlier this month to outsource 21 custodians and 2 School Resources Officers to increase cost efficiencies.
But the board amended the proposal and voted last night to approve a contract with GCA Services for cleaning duties at the high school, middle school, central office and alternative instructional buildings.
District Public Relations Officer Tawnya Hunter says the new proposal saves the district between $70k-75k and allows custodians with more than 5 years’ experience to continue employment within the system.
"Those with less than five years would then have the first opportunity to apply with GCA to seek employment to work at the middle school and the high school, the day treatment center and central office," said Hunter.
Hunter says the budget also includes 3 part-time SROs being eliminated from the elementary schools, the 2 SROs at the middle and high schools will be unaffected. She says the district will consider working with the Sheriff's Department to provide some services in the future.
The contract does allow the district to back out at any time if they feel the agreement isn’t working.
