Alumnae of an historically black sorority want to start a community conversation about student achievement among subgroups in Paducah. The local alumnae chapterof Delta Sigma Theta’s “Call to Action” Town Hall Meeting is Saturday.
Paducah is one of 40 communities nationwide selected for the Delta Research and Educational Foundation’s Teacher Efficacy CampaignAdvocacy Sessions.
Chapter President Sheila Smith-Anderson says discussions of race relations are increasing in Paducah. She says now is the time to discuss ways to ensure all students, no matter their background, leave school prepared for the workforce or higher education.
“We’re talking finally. You know, I think that we’ve talked under the table, we’ve talked in the back rooms. But the only time that change is going to happen if we’re willing to voice things and we’re seeking solutions. We’re saying, ‘What can we do?’ as a community.”
The “Call to Action” is the first of three meetings. Panelists at Saturday’s meeting include representatives from local school districts, higher education institutions, and local clergy. It will be held this from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at West Kentucky Community & Technical College's Engineering Technology Center.
