WKCTC's Inland Logistics and Marine Institute is funded by a portion of a $23.8 million dollar grant through the US Labor Department Trade Adjustments and Assistance Community College and Career Training Program, to start and grow their program and improve online content in an effort to provide training for high-skilled, high-wage positions. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte speaks with the program's director Troy Courtney about the program and the open house on August 10.

As part of the Mississippi River Transportation Distribution and Logistics Consortium, nine colleges along the Mississippi River are participating in the grand funding. Courtney says the program at WKCTC works with the other colleges to differentiate programming and offers collaborative training opportunities. At WKCTC, the marine technology, logistics and operations management degree is available 100% online. The grant funding is being used to improve online content with time and resources to make sure it's informative and engaging to students. They also have an agreement with Murray State University's Logistics and Supply Chain four-year degree, in which the two-year associate in applied science degree in logistics and operations management transfers directly to that program.

The 8,000 square foot facility located near the Paducah Riverport houses a navigation and radar lab with simulators, a marine diesel lab (which has a 40,000 pound 16 cylinder engine: 17 feet long, 6.5 feet wide and 9 feet tall), a studio for producing online content and classrooms for specialized for local industry.

The institute has trained nearly 700 students since receiving the grant in either face to face customized training or in the associate program. Courtney says the main goal is to target dislocated or underemployed individuals and try to provide training in the transportation distribution and logistics fields for high skilled, high wage positions. For students, the program costs around $155 per credit hour, an associate degree is around 62 credit hours total and financial aide is available. Classes begin August 17 and there is still space available for fall enrollment.

The open house is August 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. all are welcome. The facility is located at 631 Marine Way in Paducah.
