Another Tennessee Man Shot in Las Vegas Massacre, Community Raising Funds

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Another Tennessee man was among those shot in the Las Vegas massacre on Sunday night.

Sonny Melton of Big Sandy was shot and killed while protecting his wife Heather. Local residents held a vigil for Melton and his family Monday night.

First Baptist Church pastor Daryl Lewis said Jason McMillan was also shot and wounded. He said the community center and churches are raising funds to help his family. Lewis said as of Monday night McMillan is hospitalized and in stable condition.

He said things like this aren’t supposed to happen to small town communities. "Things like this aren't supposed to happen in small town communities, but I think this is where we as a community really have an opportunity to show what happens when it does," Lewis said, adding that coming together in prayer for peace and comfort is how to retaliate against tragedy.

A man opened fire on a music festival Sunday in Las Vegas, killing dozens and injuring hundreds.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
