Alcohol Sales Petitions Moving Forward in Mayfield, Graves County

Around 400 of the needed 650 signatures have been collected in Mayfield for a city-wide alcohol sales referendum. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 signatures have been collected toward a referendum for all of Graves County.

Mayfield councilman Phil Myers is one of the leaders collecting the signatures for the city’s petition, which he says has a better chance of passing than the county’s. Myers says he expects to have around 800-900 signatures secured by the first couple weeks of September. The city’s petition would allow for packaged alcohol sales - Mayfield already allows by-the-drink sales.

Those driving the county petition, including Mayfield paralegal Betsy Jones, say they are trying to get their 3,320 signatures before the city reaches their goal, in the hopes of a late December special election. The county referendum would legalize both packaged and by-the-drink sales.

Myers said even if the county petition finishes first and is voted down in a special election, the city will move forward with its own bid for a city referendum.

Graves County clerk Barry Kennemore says a special election for the city of Mayfield  would cost $10-15,000, compared to the estimated $45,000 a county referendum would cost.

A special election can’t be held within 45 days of November’s regular election.
