Frankfort, KY – The House has approved a proposal that would raise cigarette and alcohol taxes. It would increase the tax on cigarettes from 30 cents to 60 cents a pack and would impose a 6 percent retail sales tax on all alcohol products, generating an additional 179-million-dollars a year in total. The plan also would transfer 219-million-dollars from the state's rainy day fund to the general fund. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.
