(3rd Update) Murray State Police: Man with Handgun on Campus a False Alarm

3rd Update: This incident was determined to be a false alarm.  

2nd Update: Murray State Police have issued an alert that the subject has been identified and located. Resume normal activities.

Update: Suspect thin African American Male, light skin, 5'6,-5'8, short hair, thin build, gray pants, blue shirt, green shoes, Last seen in dark SUV. Person was armed with a handgun.

Original Story:

Murray State Police have sent out a notice, in which at approximately 7:38 p.m. on October 4 MSU Police Department received a report of a person with a weapon near the Wellness Center. 

MSU Police remind community members to be aware of their surroundings and to take necessary safety precautions. 

Here are suggestions to prevent you from becoming a victim, per release:

  • Remain alert and watchful for suspicious activity
  • If you see anything out of the ordinary, call the police.  Let the police investigate.
  • Trust your instincts
  • If you sense something is wrong, leave immediately
  • Travel on well-lighted and well-traveled streets at night and call the Murray State University Police Department for escorts across campus.
  • At night walk with a group or request an escort from Murray State University Police Department.
  • Never give your name, address, phone number or other information about yourself to a stranger.
  • It’s a good idea to carry a cell phone with you, it offers a way to quickly call for help.
