Cell phone trouble in three-county area

Mayfield, KY – Citizens of Carlisle, Fulton and Hickman counties are unable to dial 911 from their cell phones after a fiber-optic telecommunications line was severed near Mayfield. The Kentucky State Police reports the line supplies long-distance telephone service to Carlisle, Fulton and Hickman counties. The lack of this long distance service is preventing cellular 911 calls from being delivered to the KSP dispatch center. Land line 911 service has not been affected. It's unknown how long the outage will last.

Alcohol and Cigarette Taxes

Frankfort, KY – The House has approved a proposal that would raise cigarette and alcohol taxes. It would increase the tax on cigarettes from 30 cents to 60 cents a pack and would impose a 6 percent retail sales tax on all alcohol products, generating an additional 179-million-dollars a year in total. The plan also would transfer 219-million-dollars from the state's rainy day fund to the general fund. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.
