Western Kentucky – With as many as 30,000 problem gamblers in Kentucky, and fewer than a dozen professionals statewide certified to treat them, Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo's proposed gambling bill raises more questions than just how much revenue can be gained. Jacque Day talks with an economist and a licensed gambling counselor, to weigh the pros and cons of expanding gambling in the commonwealth.

Gardeners' Toolbox with Dr. Dwayne Estes

Murray, KY – Friday, Jan. 23, the Purchase Area Master Gardeners host a Gardeners' Toolbox program at 1 p.m. at Western Baptist Heart Center auditorium. UK Forestry professor and photographer Thomas G. Barnes had to cancel unexpectedly. Photographer Denise Boaz is presenting a workshop in his absence. Austin Peay State University biology professor Dr. Dwayne Estes is still on the program as well. Kate Lochte has more with Dr. Estes, who studies plant species of the southeast and their distribution patterns.

Extension of Grant Announced for Cleanup of Gaseous Diffusion Plant

Paducah, KY – The Department of Energy has awarded a 2.4 million dollar extension to the grant for environmental research and cleanup at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion plant. Senator Mitch McConnell announced the extension Wednesday, saying it will enable the Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and the Environment to assist in the work. The consortium plans to use the funds, which will last through September 30, 2010, to address the technical aspects of the cleanup.

Eagle Watch

Hardin, KY – The eagle has long been a symbol of power and royalty everywhere from ancient Babylon and Egypt to many European countries. Carrie Pond recently attended an Eagle Watch tour at Kenlake State Resort Park to learn more about our national bird.

I wanted to mention that we will be seeing some bald eagles if all goes well.
