Road opens after accident

Coldwater, KY – Traffic is back to normal this afternoon after a two-car accident closed Old Mayfield Road in McCracken County for several hours. The crash, which involved a truck and a passenger vehicle, resulted in two injuries.

CPE Sets 4 percent Tuition Ceiling for MSU

Murray, KY – Kentucky's public universities will be limited on how high they can raise tuition for the upcoming academic year. The state Council on Postsecondary Education set tuition ceilings during its meeting today, including a four percent limit for undergraduate tuition at regional comprehensive universities like Murray State. Assistant Vice President of Communications Catherine Sivills says budget work has already begun. She says the tuition cap gives officials a rough idea on how much wiggle room they'll have.

Wickliffe paper plant offers to take storm debris

Wickliffe, KY – A local paper plant has proposed a new method for disposing of debris from January's ice storm. NewPage Corporation spokeswoman Sandra Wilson says the company's Wickliffe plant has offered to take the bark from fallen trees to fuel its boiler. The plant can only use so much bark, but it has offered to take portions of debris from both Paducah and Mayfield. Wilson says NewPage has yet to receive any trees, but it is open to negotiation with contractors.

Daniels Announces AZ Position

Paducah, KY – Candidate for Paducah Police Chief Robert Daniels has announced he's accepted a position in Arizona. The announcement comes just after city commissioners named Daniels, of Juno Beach, Florida, a contender for the position. Daniels has accepted a police chief post in Buckeye, Arizona. City public information officer Pam Spencer says commissioners will decide whether to proceed with the interview process with the remaining five hopefuls, or begin searching for an additional candidate.

LBL to Receive Economic Recovery Funds

Golden Pond, KY – The U.S. Forest Service will include three Kentucky projects in its national plan for the economic recovery program, including two in the Land between the Lakes National Recreation Area. LBL will receive 2 and a half million dollars toward road and facility projects. Both projects hope to address the severe damage LBL sustained during the recent ice storm. The Forest Service estimates these projects will create at least 34 new jobs in the region.

Primary Bill Clears Senate

Frankfort, KY – Legislation to move the filing deadline from January to April for Kentucky candidates has cleared the Senate. The measure pushes back the deadline from the last Tuesday in January to the last Tuesday in April. It also moves the presidential primary from May to August. Senator Julian Carrol passed on the vote.
