Beshear on Taxes

Bowling Green, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says Kentucky House Leaders should keep open the last two weeks in June. Beshear says he's not decided yet to call a special legislative session, but he's prepared to if necessary. On Friday, the Governor receives a new budget forecast which he expects to show a deficit near one-billion dollars. Beshear says raising taxes would not be on a special session agenda.

Police Without Leads on Escaped Inmate

Elkton, KY – Kentucky State Police are still without leads in their search for an inmate that escaped from Todd County Jail. Police say Nathaniel Barber broke out Monday morning while participating in an exercise period. Barber was wearing an orange jump suit and has numerous tattoos on his body. He was serving time on drug and traffic charges.

Two Sentenced on Child Abuse

Murray, KY – A Murray man and woman will serve a combined 14 years in prison on child abuse charges. Calloway Circuit Judge Dennis Faust sentenced Carol Erwin to ten year in prison for first degree criminal abuse and assault. Faust gave Derek Chandler four years without probation for complicity in the case. A Kentucky Attorney General's Office investigation previously discovered Erwin had severely abused a four-year-old child in her care for a year. Chandler was convicted for permitting the abuse.

Oak Grove City Hall Expansion Planned

Oak Grove, KY – Oak Grove officials are looking to build a new city hall and government center. Mayor Dan Potter tells the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle the city is looking to build a 4 million dollar structure to house municipal government offices, council chambers and a public utilities department. The mayor says a major retail center is expected to open in the next two years, bringing with it an increase in demand for community services. The exact location of the proposed 17,800 square foot structure is pending.

KCHIP Numbers Increase

Frankfort, KY – The down economy has more Kentucky children receiving free or low-cost health insurance. Last October, Governor Beshear announced that some fifty-thousand kids were eligible for K-CHIP, but were not enrolled in the program. The state has since stepped up outreach efforts to parents. K-CHIP coordinator Lisa Lee says nine-thousand more children have been added in the past six months.
