KY Senate President Critical of Job Offers

Frankfort, KY – The president of the Kentucky Senate says Governor Steve Beshear is "poisoning" the state's political environment by offering lawmakers jobs outside the General Assembly. Senate President David Williams says Beshear has targeted Senate Majority Floor Leader Dan Kelly for a possible judicial appointment in his district.

Hynes Enters IL Governor's Race, Proposes Tax Changes

Springfield, IL – Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes formally announced his campaign for governor yesterday by saying he would try to raise state income taxes on the wealthy as a way to address the state's budget crisis. Hynes will probably face incumbent Governor Pat Quinn in next year's Democratic primary.

Ft. Campbell: Low Cost of Living

Fort Campbell, KY – A recent Army Times study on how soldiers spend their money, says wages made by personnel at Fort Campbell stretches further than at most other military installations. Fort Campbell has one of the lowest costs of living, about 21% below the national average. However, the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports it's not the lowest. At Fort Riley, Kansas, the cost of living is about 4% lower.

Beshear, Health Officials Attending Flu Summit

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is attending a flu summit today. Beshear is scheduled to speak this afternoon during the summit at the Frankfort Convention Center. The summit is intended to help private and public stake-holders prepare in case the swine flu epidemic worsens.

Hargrove Appointed Special Prosecutor

Benton, KY – Graves Commonwealth Attorney David Hargrove has been appointed to oversee the criminal case against a former Marshall County school employee. The case alleges the employee, who was not a teacher, had an inappropriate relationship with a student. The employee has not been identified because no charges have been filed. The employee resigned in June after a Kentucky State Police investigation began looking into the matter. The Paducah Sun reports the case is scheduled to go before a grand jury in two weeks.

Two Airlines; One Barkley Regional Airport

Paducah, KY – SkyWest and Mesaba are two airline companies vying for a US Department of Transportation subsidy this week, which includes Paducah's Barkley Regional Airport. While Mesaba is Paducah's current carrier, connecting to Delta's Memphis hub; SkyWest is proposing to fly 50-seat jets twice daily between Paducah and Chicago's O'Hare Airport. SkyWest is seeking roughly half the amount of federal subisidies that rival Mesaba is asking for. According to the Paducah Sun, it will take about a month to review the proposals.
