Former Henry High Teacher Pleads Guilty

Paris, TN – A former Henry County High School teacher has pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated statutory rape, admitting she had a relationship with a 16-year-old male student. 37-year-old Sandra Kay Curtis of Camden was sentenced Monday to one-hundred and days in confinement and up to four years on supervised probation. Curtis is to have no contact with the victims, must register as a sex offender, and has agreed not to work in any school system again.

Dispute Over Uranium Cylinder Damage Settled

Paducah, KY – The company that operates Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant has settled a dispute with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission over concealed damage to a valve on an empty uranium cylinder. The NRC confirmed the settlement, along with two others with USEC, in letters August 13th. USEC requested mediation in each case and as a result, the NRC says it won't propose a civil penalty, issue a notice of violation or take other enforcement action.

Traffic Advisory: I-24 Work

Christain County, KY – Several lanes of Interstate 24 through Christian County will be closed today as workers construct a new overhead message board system near the Kentucky Welcome Center. The work is expected to take several weeks. Drivers should be alert for slowing and merging traffic near the Kentucky-Tennessee State Line.

Financial Straits

Frankfort, KY – An attempt to block an early release program for state prison inmates has now reached the Kentucky Supreme Court. Assistant Attorney General Hays Lawson argues a lower court ruling allowing the program to continue should be reversed. Another lower court ordered the program stopped. But Justice Mary Noble questions whether the courts should even be questioning legislative intent.
"Doesn't the act itself basically, if not say outright, clearly imply that, look, this is for now emergency thing and we're doing it to save money because we're in financial straits."

Parole Credits

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Supreme Court has heard oral arguments regarding a hotly-debated early release program for state prison inmates. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh was in the courtroom.
Seven thousand Kentucky prison inmates and parolees are now free under the early release program, which is based on parole credits. Efforts by the attorney general to block the program reached the supreme court, where this exchange occurred between Chief Justice John Minton and Assistant Attorney General Hays Lawson.
