General Assembly Budget Activity

Frankfort, KY – With Kentucky's 2010 legislative session just seven weeks off, budget-related activity is picking up in Frankfort. Despite recent budget cuts and tax hikes, Kentucky is still facing a revenue shortfall of 161-million dollars this fiscal year. But with legislative elections looming next year, House budget chairman Rick Rand seriously doubts the next biennial budget will include tax increases.

"We raised cigarette and alcohol taxes in February and I think the likelihood of us raising taxes again are very, very slim."

KY Ag Commissioner Urges Thanks for Farmers

Frankfort, KY – Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer is urging Kentuckians to show their gratitude for the farmers who fill the nation's fridges. Farmer also says it's especially appropriate during a time of year known for bountiful meals. Kentucky farmers produced a record $4.7 billion worth of crops and livestock in 2008, contributing significantly to the nation's agricultural production that he called the most abundant and affordable food supply in the world.

Public Radio Service WKMS Meets $100,000 Fundraiser Goal in Community Support

Murray, KY – Murray State's listener supported public radio service, 91.3 FM, WKMS concluded its autumn fundraiser with the final day of its on-air campaign on November 3. Listeners and underwriters providing matching grants met the $100,000 goal, and these contributions go into the station's operating budget for business expenses, like the website www.wkms.org that the station maintains year round for listening to its two channels online.

AARP Holds Rally at the Capitol

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky and other senior groups held a rally today in Frankfort to protest additional cuts to services for the elderly. Preventing more budget cuts is A-A-R-P's top priority in the 2010 General Assembly. Nelda Barnett, AARP Kentucky state president said it's important to protect state services that allow thousands of seniors and citizens with disabilities to be cared for in their homes.

Homelessness Problem

Frankfort, KY – This is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in the Commonwealth and those close to the issue say people without a proper place to live aren't those you might imagine. Gerry Roll with the Kentucky Interagency Council on Homelessness says many have jobs, but not jobs that provide them the kind of paychecks they need. Roll says Kentucky also suffers from a problem of trying to identify what defines proper housing. She says people in need are stretching some houses to the limit.
