Troops Hone Artillery Skills to Cut Afghan Deaths

Fort Campbell, KY – Soldiers headed for Afghanistan are getting new training on when to use high-powered weapons as the U.S. looks to reduce civilian deaths. Troops with the 101st Airborne Division have been spending weeks in the woods on the Kentucky-Tennessee line learning new tactics to fight the Taliban. The updated methods include using smoke bombs and smaller explosions to let spotters get close enough to targets to decide whether to launch a heavy assault.

General Assembly Budget Activity

Frankfort, KY – With Kentucky's 2010 legislative session just seven weeks off, budget-related activity is picking up in Frankfort. Despite recent budget cuts and tax hikes, Kentucky is still facing a revenue shortfall of 161-million dollars this fiscal year. But with legislative elections looming next year, House budget chairman Rick Rand seriously doubts the next biennial budget will include tax increases.

"We raised cigarette and alcohol taxes in February and I think the likelihood of us raising taxes again are very, very slim."

KY Ag Commissioner Urges Thanks for Farmers

Frankfort, KY – Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer is urging Kentuckians to show their gratitude for the farmers who fill the nation's fridges. Farmer also says it's especially appropriate during a time of year known for bountiful meals. Kentucky farmers produced a record $4.7 billion worth of crops and livestock in 2008, contributing significantly to the nation's agricultural production that he called the most abundant and affordable food supply in the world.

Public Radio Service WKMS Meets $100,000 Fundraiser Goal in Community Support

Murray, KY – Murray State's listener supported public radio service, 91.3 FM, WKMS concluded its autumn fundraiser with the final day of its on-air campaign on November 3. Listeners and underwriters providing matching grants met the $100,000 goal, and these contributions go into the station's operating budget for business expenses, like the website www.wkms.org that the station maintains year round for listening to its two channels online.
