KY Smoking Cessation

Frankfort, KY – A report by anti-smoking groups ranks Kentucky 40th among states in the amount of money spent to persuade people to quit or never start smoking. The report says Kentucky spends $3.9 million a year on tobacco prevention and cessation programs,
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that total is far below the amount the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends. Kentucky ranked 41st last year. The slight bump is due to an increase in federal funding for Kentucky cessation programs.

Paris Plans to Build Indoor Practice Field

Paris, TN – Paris, Tennessee officials have approved a site to build a 4,400-square-foot indoor baseball and softball practice facility next to Henry County High School. The Henry County Baseball Boosters organization will finance the construction. The city recently donated much of the land where the facility is to be built. The Paris Post Intelligencer reports the booster club plans to deed the property to the county after its completion.

Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit

Paducah, KY – A federal judge last week dismissed a lawsuit filed against the city of Paducah and City Manager Jim Zumwalt, ruling it had no merit. Paducah Human Rights Commission executive director Stanley Beauchamp filed the suit. He claimed the city's repeated attempts to cut funding for the agency was based on racial discrimination and retaliation. The city claimed the reasons for its cuts were financially-based. The Paducah Sun reports the judge found Beauchamp did not provide enough evidence to prove his claim.
