KY Diploma Summit

Frankfort, KY – Today's job market alone is tough, but nearly 6,500 Kentucky students left school last year without a high school diploma. First Lady Jane Beshear is hosting a summit in Frankfort next month focused on dropout prevention. Mrs. Beshear hopes people from all backgrounds will register to attend the discussion. Summit participants, including the governor, will discuss why students are dropping out of school and how the state can raise graduation rates.

Quinn Grapples with Prison Cuts Amid Budget Mess

Springfield, IL – A bipartisan group tapped by IL Gov. Pat Quinn says financial cuts to the state's corrections system might include closing some prisons and releasing low-risk inmates. And while it's unclear whether Quinn will follow the Taxpayer Action Board's recommendations in June, Quinn is showing signs that its tips may have gotten his attention.

Symsonia Funeral Home Under Investigation

Symsonia, KY – A Symsonia-based funeral home is under investigation by the Kentucky Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. At least three families complained they have not received death certificates for their loved ones. The board is sending an inspector to Funeral Service Directors of Symsonia this week to secure records so the families can file for death certificates. Owner Greg Woodruff tells the Paducah Sun his business is filing for bankruptcy and although late, he mailed the certificates out last Wednesday.

Man Charged with Assault, DUI in Police Chase

Calloway County, KY – Kentucky State Police have arrested a man who they say struck police cars during an extensive chase through Henry and Calloway counties. According to a release from the Kentucky State Police Post on Saturday, deputies broke off the first pursuit of Eugene Duffy after they said he tried to ram them in an effort to escape, and because of his dangerous driving.

Murray State Gets Unusual Assistant Coach

Murray, KY – Murray State made an unusual hire for an open assistant coaching position - the reigning Ohio Valley Coach of the Year. Racers head coach Billy Kennedy brought former Tennessee-Martin coach Bret Campbell on board after Campbell resigned in June in the wake of a university audit showing he deposited checks from his summer camp in his personal account.
