Library Reopens After Crash

Madisonville, KY – The Madisonville-Hopkins County Public Library is open again for the first time in nearly two weeks. The library closed July 12 when their entire computer system crashed. Officials weren't able to determine the cause, but technicians have installed new hardware. Patrons won't be charged for overdue items.

Body Found in A&W Motel Room

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville police are investigating the death of an unidentified man discovered yesterday in a Madison Street motel. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports the man, allegedly nicknamed "Slick," was found in one of the A&W Motel's rooms. Police say blood was everywhere and the room's door was removed as evidence. Witnesses told investigators they overheard an argument with furniture thrown the previous night. This is the fourth death reported in or near the A&W Motel in 10 years.

Charges Upgraded in TN Holiday Weekend Boat Crash

Paris, TN – Authorities have upgraded charges against a Woodlawn man in a fatal boating crash on Kentucky Lake during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. David Ray Phelps received additional charges of vehicular homicide, and reckless and negligent operation of a vessel. Phelps was initially charged with boating under the influence. 37-year-old Phelps was arraigned this week on the new charges and was free on bond.

McCracken Jail Inmate Sentenced to 10 Years for Biting Off Ear

Paducah, KY – An inmate at the McCracken County Jail has been sentenced to 10-years for biting off another inmate's ear. 27-year-old Darryl Samuels of Memphis, Tennessee will serve the maximum sentence for the second-degree assault. Samuels will serve the time after finishing a 12-year sentence for first-degree rape, which he pled guilty to in January. Samuels apologized for biting Christopher Gravett, and says he plans to appeal his conviction.

Progress Rail Secures Rebuilding Contract

Mayfield, KY – A Mayfield locomotive repair depot has finished work on the first of fifty-two Chicago commuter trains. The Mayfield division of Progress Rail has begun a contract to rebuild the trains, which transport Chicagoans back and forth to work. Human Resources Manager Bob McNutt tells the Mayfield Messenger employees are grateful for the work. The company had been threatening layoffs and cutbacks.
