10 Charges of Child Rape against Oak Grove Man

Oak Grove, KY – An Oak Grove, Kentucky man yesterday was charged with 10 counts of child rape. 43-year-old Wayne J. Coates is in Christian County Jail on a $100,000 bond, where he awaits extradition to Montgomery County, Tennessee, where the allegations originated. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports Coates was arrested by US Marshals and is not a convicted sex offender.

Bredesen Lobbies for Education Reform

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen is lobbying hard for an education overhaul that he wants to pass at a special session that starts next week. Bredesen says it's time to change the way teachers and principals are evaluated in order to secure a bigger share of federal education funds. Tennessee is eligible to receive up to 250-million dollars in "Race to the Top" money. The special session begins January 12.

Former City Employee Says Not Involved in Meth

Calvert City, KY – A former Calvert City employee has pled not guilty on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine. Shane Greer entered the plea today in Marshall County Circuit Court. Greer and three inmates from the Marshall County Jail were indicted after a meth lab sparked a fire near an area school.

Beshear Talks Budget at Press Conference

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has unveiled his plan for eliminating a 108-million dollar deficit in the current state budget. Beshear is ordering most state agencies to cut spending by three percent, but sparing basic school funding, Medicaid, public safety and higher education.
