Immigration Reform Supporters Rally in Lexington

As a group of senators known as the “Gang of Eight” work toward an immigration bill in Washington, supporters of reform are urging Congress to act sooner rather than later.

One of the 70 demonstrations planned across the country Wednesday was held at Lexington’s Triangle Park. Speakers and musicians rallied a crowd of more than 150 people.

Illinois Businesses Push Immigration Reform

A new group of business leaders wants to recruit 300 CEOs and 1,000 small businesses in Illinois to push for "common sense" bipartisan immigration reform.

The Illinois Business Immigration Coalition includes leaders from Peoria-based Caterpillar as well as Motorola Solutions, the University of Illinois, trade groups and immigration-rights advocates. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also backs the coalition.

Kentucky Senate Passes Bill Barring Welfare for Immigrants

A proposal to keep illegal immigrants from getting welfare benefits in Kentucky has passed the state Senate. The legislation sponsored by Republican Senator Mike Wilson cleared the Senate Monday. The bill requires welfare applicants to present documentation of U.S. citizenship or legal residency in order to be eligible. If they're not able to produce a document such as a birth certificate or driver's license within 30 days, they could sign an affidavit swearing that they are eligible for the benefits. The measure now goes to the House for consideration.
