A possible speed limit change on Illinois interstates may keep motorists from slowing down when they cross into the Land of Lincoln.

Both houses of the Illinois General Assembly have passed a bill that would raise the speed limit on interstate highways from 65 to 70 mph. Kentucky and Tennessee interstate speed limits are 70 mph in most non-metropolitan areas.

The bill awaits action by Gov. Pat Quinn, who said he was undecided on the matter last month. If Quinn vetoes the bill, the Senate can override him with a three-fifths majority vote.

Gov. Pat Quinn isn't saying whether he'd support legislation boosting the speed limit on Illinois interstates and tollways.

The Illinois Senate approved a measure 41-6 Wednesday raising the speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph. The bill awaits a House vote. If Quinn signs it, the new speed limit could take effect at the start of next year.

Calloway County’s Fiscal Court is endorsing a speed limit increase for parts of KY-80 in Calloway and Graves counties. County Judge Executive Larry Elkins says increasing the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 would allow for a smoother flow of private and commercial traffic.

Governor Steve Beshear is expected to be in western Kentucky next week to make an announcement regarding speed changes on sections of KY 68/80. Kentucky Transportation spokesman Keith Todd says a press conference is tentatively set for Tuesday in Christian County.
