MSU President Speaks Out Regarding Ad-Hoc Contract Review Committee Report

Murray State University President Randy Dunn is speaking out publicly for the first time regarding a draft report from a Board of Regents ad-hoc contract review committee. The report depicts university progress and/or lack thereof during Dunn’s six year tenure. Faculty Senate and Staff Congress members questioned board chairman Dr. Constantine Curris about many aspects of the report this week. Curris stands by the work. Dunn takes issue with a number of elements, “I think on the academic performance side, to some degree, there was a little bit of cherry picking that went on to make a worse case than what exists,” Dunn said.

Murray State’s Board of Regents Chairman Dr. Constantine Curris answered an hour’s worth of questions Tuesday afternoon from faculty and staff regarding the board’s vote not to extend Murray State President Randy Dunn’s contract. That vote came on March 15^th the day after 5 to 6 regents met for a social gathering and casually discussed university business. A Lexington attorney is questioning that social gathering as an illegal meeting. Curris maintains there was no collusion or discussion of a vote on the president’s contract at that gathering.

Lexington Attorney Files Open Meetings Complaint Against Murray State Board of Regents

A Lexington-based attorney with a history representing former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher has sent a complaint to Murray State’s Board of Regents Chair alleging a violation of Kentucky’s Open Meeting law.

Jim Deckard sent the complaint to Dr. Constantine Curris Thursday. Deckard, referencing media reports, says a quorum of regents gathered at regent Sharon Green’s home and discussed board business the night before the board’s quarterly meeting.

Two Kentucky newspaper editorials call into question a social gathering held for five or six Murray State Regents the night before a failed vote on renewing a four-year contract for MSU President Dr. Randy Dunn. MSU's Board of Regents voted 7 to 4 against extending Dunn a new four year contract on Friday. On Thursday evening Regent Sharon Green invited regents who don't live in Murray to her home for a social gathering. Board Chairman Constantine Curris told WKMS he thought 5 or 6 regents were in attendance and they discussed university business.

A Murray State Board of Regents Ad Hoc committee will gather data under four headings to review President Randy Dunn’s contract. Board Chairman Dr. Constantine Curris met with Vice-Chair Marilyn Buchanon, and Finance Committee Chair Stephen Williams in Louisville today.

The four subjects the committee intend to evaluate include: the university’s progress during the last five years, statements and resolutions of support or criticism, presidential and board relationships and contract provisions.

Murray State University’s President says he's confused about an ad-hoc committee's planned closed door meeting about his contract. Randy Dunn's current contract expires in June of 2014, and requires the university's Board of Regents to act on his contract one year before expiration. The board voted to create the ad-hoc committee in December.

Dunn’s contract expires in June of 2014. He also underwent a comprehensive employment review in 2012.
