Murray Tourism and Convention Center’s Executive Director Erin Carrico previews Murray’s Freedom Fest with Tracy Ross on Sounds Good. Freedom Fest kicks of Friday, June 28 with a street fair featuring vendors and a free outdoor concert by Matty McRee and Clarence Dobbins. Joy Thomas on Painting Professional Portraits

Murray-based portrait artist Joy Thomas has captured the likeness of members of the community and leaders in government and business. Some of her commissions include the official portrait of Secretary of the US Navy, Richard Danzig; New York Jets owner, Robert Wood Johnson; and recently, John E. Bryson, the 37th US Secretary of Commerce. Her work has been on exhibit across the country, featured in magazines, and has won several awards, including first place in "The Best Paintings of 2000" competition by The Artist's Magazine. In 2006, she published The Art of Portrait Drawing, which is available on Amazon. She came to our studio to speak with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about her work.

Murray Man Seeks Challenge in Spartan Death Race

You may die... Well, at least that’s what organizers say to participants of what they bill as the world's most difficult endurance race. Competitors in the Spartan Death Race can look forward to at least 48 hours of excruciating pain and challenges designed to push them to their limits. Murray insurance agent Ryan Walker is training to be one of the few to complete the endurance challenge next month. Walker now trains for a race in which the obstacles ahead of him are largely unknown.

Relay for Life Raises Awareness in Murray

The American Cancer Society's Community Representative Pam Whittemore likens the Relay for Life event at Murray's Stewart Stadium this Friday night to the experience of a cancer patient: everyone's there at the diagnosis or beginning, then during treatment attention dwindles or is unwanted, and upon cure everyone's back cheering. So Friday's event opens at 7 p.m.; the Luminaria Ceremony is at 9:30; and bands play from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. when everybody's tired and there's some attrition. Nonetheless everyone's back for the 7 a.m. awards ceremony Saturday.

'Run for the Homeless' at the Gentry House Derby Party

Mike Wilson and Emily Kohl of the Gentry House in Murray stop by our studio on Sounds Good to speak with Kate Lochte about the first-annual community Derby Party: Run for the Homeless fundraiser on Saturday, May 4th at the Murray Banquet Center. The event starts at 2 p.m. and the race begins at 5:24 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Gentry House in Murray. Murray Citizens And Leaders Meet With EPA in Development Workshop

Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency met with citizens, civic leaders and Murray State officials last night to discuss sustainable rural development strategies. Such strategies include how to increase green spaces, promote more biking and walking and adjust zoning for new and aging neighborhoods. EPA contractor Milton Herd said Murray is not alone in wanting to sustain its growth as well as its rural nature.

Revitalizing the Higgins House and Other Murray Main Street Projects

Deana Wright visits Sounds Good Friday to give an update on work on revitalizing the Higgins House just west of the Murray Calloway County Public Library on Main Street. Wright says that Main Street is looking at about $200,000 in repairs before "the pretty" work begins to convert the hundred year old home into public spaces, particularly for social gatherings involving fewer than 50 attendees. Also, learn more about the 100 Year Anniversary of the County Court House on the Murray square to be celebrated on May 7.
