TVA Will Not Raise Electricity Rates for Customers

The Tennessee Valley Authority will keep electricity rates the same for customers in the coming fiscal year. TVA's board of directors voted today to approve an over eleven billion dollar budget without raising rate hikes for the fiscal year that begins October 1st. The federal utility provides electricity to 9 million people in seven states, including Kentucky and Tennessee. TVA CEO Tom Kilgore also announced at the meeting that he will be retiring after 6 years in the position.

Low Water Levels at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake

Lake Barkley water levels are at a record low for this time of year. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers says the lake is at just over 356 feet, almost three feet below normal. The low levels are due to a lack of rainfall in the latter part of March and all of April. The Corps of Engineers and Tennessee Valley Authority continue to conserve and store water in an attempt to reach summer pool, around 359 feet. But without more rain, it is unlikely that either Barkley or Kentucky Lake will reach summer pool anytime soon.

USEC Implements Cuts

The company that operates the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion plant says it's cutting spending and implementing layoffs at two of its locations around the country.

The United States Enrichment Corporation's headquarters in Bethesda, MD is freezing salaries, hiring, as well as undergoing a 10% staff reduction. Spokesman Paul Jacobson says these changes are a result of shifts in the national and global market.

PGDP Still Faces Potential Shutdown

As the end of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant’s TVA utility contract nears, the plant’s operators are still searching for ways to keep the plant open for the foreseeable future. The plant’s current TVA contract expires at the end of May. United States Enrichment Corporation officials are negotiating new terms to provide a better market for their services and allow them to continue operations. USEC's Paducah Plant Spokesperson Georgann Lookofsky says the new contract is just one of several problems they need to solve to keep the plant running. She says,

Pay Keeps Increasing for Top TVA Managers

Top managers at the Tennessee Valley Authority now make more than members of Congress, who are paid $174,000 annually. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports TVA is paying out nearly $30 million a year more for 155 of its top leaders since Congress removed salary limits at the federal utility in 2004. Former TVA Director Skila Harris said the changes have helped the utility hire qualified workers, plant managers, technicians and executives.
