Lone Oak High School Senior Competes in Poetry Out Loud Championship

Jazmyne Lilly, Senior from Lone Oak High School, competes in the state Poetry Out Loud Championship in Frankfort Tuesday, March 12. She is one of three seniors from our region among seventeen finalists for the opportunity to represent the Commonwealth in national competition. She previews her recitation of a Carl Sandburg poem for us.

Three McCracken Co. Schools Qualify for Poetry Out Loud Competition

Three McCracken County school have been chosen to participate in the state Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest sposored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Heath, Reidland and Lone Oak high schools will take part in the state finals with 15 other Kentucky high schools. The program is now in its eighth year and encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation.

'Poetry Out Loud' Competition This Week

Kentucky high school students will compete this week in the national Poetry Out Loud recitation contest in Frankfort. Champions from 21 high schools across Kentucky will participate in the state finals Wednesday at the Capital Plaza Hotel. The contest was launched in 2006 by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The Kentucky Arts Council says it helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. The state winner receives $200 and a trip to Washington for national finals.
