Basketball Debate Sidetracks Senate Campaigns

Frankfort, KY – Both Democratic and Republican Senate candidates are cashing in on the longtime basketball rivalry between number one NCAA seeds University of Kentucky and Duke. While Lieutenant Governor Dan Mongiardo points out his primary opponent Attorney General Jack Conway is a Duke graduate, Secretary of State Trey Grayson is running internet ads saying his main opponent Dr. Rand Paul received his medical degree from Duke.

Paducah Man Arrested for Eight Burglaries

Paducah, KY – A Paducah man has been arrested for a string of break-ins in McCracken County. Police have charged 35-year-old Jeremie Heady with eight counts of burglary after several pieces of stolen jewelry were recovered at a scrap-gold buying business. Detectives allege Heady broke into eight homes since last week while residents were away.

GED programs growing

Frankfort, KY – More Kentuckians are enrolling in adult education programs to help them earn their GED. The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education reports enrollment in basic, secondary, and ESL courses is up 16 percent from this time last year.

"Certainly the economy today causes many adults who may have lost their job, it's a good time for them to reengage in the education process. Certainly a lot of our efforts in the local communities to reach students a lot of times is through word of mouth."

Water System Project Doubles Capacity

Cadiz, KY – The Lake Barkley Water District plans to begin a $7.5 million system improvement project later this year. General Manager Terry Goins says the work will double the district's capacity. Five point four million dollars of the funding comes from a USDA loan, and Goins says they'll repay that with a rate increase. Goins says the base rate for customers will likely go up a little over a dollar fifty this coming fiscal year. Construction is slated for October, and Goins says the project will be finished in 2012.

Commissioners Opt Out of Pay Increase

Murray, KY – Paducah City Commissioners voted last night to suspend a nearly 3 percent state recommended cost of living adjustment. Mayor Bill Paxton and the four commissioners typically receive the annual increase. The city's 205 non-uniformed employees have not received a raise so far this year, but may see a 1.5% increase in July. The Mayor's yearly salary will remain at $22,488 and each Commissioner's salary will remain at $20,202.
