Mixed reactions from lawmakers

Frankfort, KY – Governor Pat Quinn is getting mixed reactions from lawmakers over his proposal to raise the Illinois income tax. Republican leaders say raising taxes by one percentage point is unacceptable. They say pension, Medicaid and other government reforms need to happen before a tax increase. However, Democratic Senate President John Cullerton supports the proposal.

Illinois Budget Address

Springfield, IL – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is urging lawmakers to raise income taxes to avoid deep cuts in spending on schools and colleges. Quinn proposed a one percent increase during a brief budget speech to the General Assembly today. The Democratic governor did not say how much money the increase would raise or what he means by a tax "surcharge." He says, however, the increase would be enough to avoid the $1.3 billion in education cuts that his budget calls for.

WKMS Fundraiser Gets $14,000 Boost

Murray, KY – WKMS, 91.3 FM, Murray, announced today that it has reached almost two-thirds of its spring fundraiser goal with gifts from listeners, grants from local businesses, and an unexpected one-time $14,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. According to station records, listeners have contributed $63,000 to the drive with about $7,000 in matching grants from business underwriters. The overall fundraiser goal is $130,000.

Dunlap's Attorney Files for New Trial

Cadiz, KY – The defense attorney for convicted triple murderer Kevin Dunlap has filed for a new trial. James Gibson says Trigg County Circuit Judge C.A. Woodall should not have ignored Gibson's motion to recuse himself. Woodall had previously presided over Kristy Frensley's divorce proceedings. Gibson tells the Cadiz Record Woodall also erred in denying Dunlap's plea of guilty but mentally ill. A Livingston County Circuit judge will rule on the motion March 19th.
