Group Announces Finalists for Women's Award

Lexington, KY – The group Women Leading Kentucky have selected their three finalists for the Martha Layne Collins Leadership award. They are Beth Mann, the general manager of WKDZ/WHVO in Cadiz; Kentucky State University President Mary Sias and University of Kentucky extension agent Gwenda Adkins.

KY Jobless Rate Up in February

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's jobless rate rose to 10.9% in February, the highest since September 1983. That's according to an Office of Employment and Training report released Thursday. Chief state labor market analyst Justine Detzel says nonfarm employment in the state has dropped to its lowest level since April 1998. Only three of 11 major nonfarm job sectors reported an employment increase: educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and services such as repair and maintenance businesses.

Police Looking for Waffle Hut Robbery Suspect

Paducah, KY – Paducah Police now have a description of the suspect and the getaway vehicle used in Wednesday's armed robbery of Waffle Hut on Cairo Road. The suspect is described as a 5-foot-7 light-skinned African-American man last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants. He was seen getting into a burgundy passenger car with damage to the front end, which was driven by a white female heading toward I-24. Political Leaders Balk at Gun Ban in Capitol

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says he won't call for a vote on a rule change in the current legislative session to ban visitors from openly carrying guns into the House chamber. Some lawmakers have been pressing for such a ban after an unidentified man wore a holstered gun into the House chamber earlier this week and sat through an afternoon session.

Not Giving Up on Nuclear

Frankfort, KY – A Senate committee isn't giving up a proposal to lift Kentucky's moratorium on nuclear power plants. Legislators added the measure to a bill that would extend eminent domain rights to pipeline companies that would dispose of carbon dioxide, a byproduct of converting coal to cleaner burning fuels. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the revised measure. The Senate voted in January to remove the state's ban on building nuclear power plants, but the proposal has made no headway in the House.

Trial Begins for Alleged Lowes Shooter

Mayfield, KY – A jury has been selected in the trial of a woman accused of shooting her husband in a Mayfield Lowes hardware store. Ann Marie Smith allegedly shot at her husband five times, hitting him in the hand once. Before the trial, Smith pled not guilty to attempted murder and wanton endangerment charges. The trial continues Friday in Graves County Circuit Court.

Instant Racing Stalled This Session

Frankfort, KY – It looks like the instant racing bill won't make it to the finish line this session. Senator Damon Thayer's bill cleared a Senate committee two weeks ago, but was sent back for major surgery and never re-emerged. Thayer says there's still a lot of confusion about instant racing.
