KY Senate funding race

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky US Senate candidate Attorney General Jack Conway is leading hiss main primary opponent in fundraising. The democrat's 2009 campaign contributions totaled 2-point-3 million dollars from over 25-hundred donors. Conway's primary opponent Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo raised 1-point-5 million dollars in 2009. Mongiardo representatives note he outraised Conway in Kentucky contributors, with 90-percent in-state donations in the last six months.

Grayson Reports Nearly $1.7m in Donations

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Republican Secretary of State Trey Grayson is reporting that he has raised nearly $1.7 million for his U.S. Senate race, slightly less than his chief GOP rival. Bowling Green physician Rand Paul, who also is running, reported last week that he has received $1.8 million in contributions. Candidates are required to submit quarterly reports to the Federal Election Commission. Grayson's latest report shows he has $1.4 million on hand, compared to Paul's $1.3 million.

Calloway County Man on Drug, Weapons Charges

Murray, KY – A Calloway County man was arrested on drug and weapons charges over the weekend. 51-year-old Dennis Turner faces multiple charges after Calloway County Sheriff's deputies searched his Almo Shiloh Road home. The search turned up prescription drugs and paraphernalia, as well as 31 guns, three of which were modified to be fully automatic. WPSD-TV reports Turner is being held at the Calloway County Jail, while detectives continue their investigation.

Western KY Tobacco Farmers Opposed Bill

Lynn Grove, KY – Some Western Kentucky tobacco farmers are concerned about a proposed change to the way the state taxes smokeless tobacco. Lynn Grove grower Richard Smotherman claims the proposed House legislation would convert the excise tax from a weight-based rate to one that based on price. He joined US Smokeless Tobacco Company lobbyists in Frankfort last week, enlisting the support of Fifth District Representative Melvin Henley; who tells the Murray Ledger and Times the move is unfair to tobacco growers.

Bredesen: Use Reserves to Take Edge off TN Cuts

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen told lawmakers during his final State of the State address that he plans to use the state's reserves to spare some state jobs and key services from budget cuts. But Bredesen says painful cuts are unavoidable. His almost $28.5 billion budget proposal includes a fee increase for driver's licenses, new cable taxes and $394 million in cuts to recurring spending plans. He also proposes slashing more than $200 million from TennCare, the state's expanded Medicaid program.
