Marshall Co. 9th Graders Invent Firefighting Device, Compete in National Contest

A team of three 9th graders at Marshall County High School in Benton is developing a device to more effectively combat fires, and their work has won them a week's trip to DC to compete in a national competition, the U.S. Army-sponsored eCYBERMISSION. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte asks Marshall Co. High School science teacher Lisa Devillez to explain how the students got involved and she asks the students to describe the device and explain what it does.

Youth Report: Behind the Scenes of Alice in Wonderland Jr.

This weekend, Playhouse in the Park presents two children's shows for the price of one: Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures and the musical Alice in Wonderland, Jr. WKMS Youth Reporter Patrick Jones goes behind-the-scenes during a rehearsal for Alice, meeting some of the cast members and speaking with Playhouse director Lisa Cope about how kids have become involved in these productions both on and off stage.

Youth Report: The Importance of the Heart and Keeping It Healthy

WKMS Youth Reporter Rymia Burks recently participated in a Heart Walk at Noble Park in Paducah and had a chance to speak with Dan Bergman, Executive Director of Cardiovascular Service line and CVI at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, about the importance of the heart and keeping it healthy. He also explains that children can have heart problems, too, and how someone at a young age can prevent problems from becoming potentially life-threatening in adulthood. Youth Radio Movie Review: Thunderstruck

Thunderstruck is a 2012 film starring Oklahoma City Thunder player Kevin Durant, and Taylor Gray, Jim Belushi, Brandon T. Jackson, and Doc Shaw. It follows the story of a 16 year-old named Brian who can't play basketball but dreams to play like his hero, Kevin Durant. When Brian attends a game and gets the opportunity to meet Durant, they unknowingly transfer basketball abilities. WKMS Youth Radio Project's youth reporter Patrick Jones brings us this review.

Youth Report: LBL Fossil Hunt

Did you know that this region was once part of an ancient body of water called the Western Interior Seaway? A large inland sea pushed countless numbers of fossils into this area in the mid-to-late Cretaceous period. WKMS Youth Reporter Aaron Sikkel went on a fossil hunt at Land Between the Lakes with Naturist Andrea Woody  in search for Brachiopods, Trilobites, and other weird looking creatures that called western Kentucky home over a billion years ago.

Youth Report: Ed Hochuli on Being an NFL Referee

Patrick Jones talks to Ed in our studio, Ed Hochuli on the cover of Sports Illustrated

NFL referees returned to the gridiron recently after a brief strike which saw replacement referees calling important games. Nine-year-old WKMS Youth Reporter Patrick Jones scored an interview with one of NFL's most famous official referees, Ed Hochuli. He was ranked by ESPN as one of the best referees in the business. More recently, you'll find him on the cover of the October issue of Sports Illustrated. Patrick spoke with him over the phone, from our studio.

Youth Report: Workshops at the Murray Art Guild

Many of the area kids are going back to school this month, but there’s still plenty to do in the community for those looking for extra-curricular activities this fall. WKMS Youth Reporter Austin Cobb attended some classes at the Murray Art Guild, which run year-round. He interviewed his teachers, potter Reid Parrish and craftsman Wyatt Severs, and the guild’s director Debi Danielson and brings us this report.

Youth Report: Behind-the-Scenes of Playhouse Production Disney's Cinderella Kids

Every year, Murray’s Playhouse in the Park invites children to a week-long Summer Theatre Camp that engages them in the production of a full-length show. 90 kids signed up for the musical this year. WKMS Youth Reporters Anna-Cate Brown, Brynn Jones, and Wendy Waltrip got a behind-the-scenes scoop on the show, Disney’s Cinderella Kids.
