Martin, Tennessee hosts the 21st Tennessee Soybean Festival starts this evening and culminates the first weekend in September. What began as a concept by a group of professors at UT Martin has grown to an event expecting 25-30 thousand people in Martin. This year's theme is "Let it Grow" and features new events like Disney downtown with a showing of Frozen, art exhibits on campus, and concerts including chart-topping country artist Lee Brice. We learn all about the festival with the City of Martin's Brad Thompson on Sounds Good.

This week, the University of Tennessee at Martin hosts "Freedom Summer: Fifty Years Later." It's their 14th Annual Civil Rights Conference featuring keynote speaker Mr. Dave Dennis, who participated in the first Freedom Bus ride from Montgomery, Alabama and in voter registration efforts during the 1964 Freedom Summer. Today, he works as the director and CEO of the Southern Initiative of the Algebra Project, a nonprofit that aims to improve mathematics education for minority children. UTM Department of History faculty member Dr. Renee LaFleur is coordinator for the conference and speaks with Kate Lochte about its events on Sounds Good.

The University of Tennessee at Martin is shuttering a fraternity after denying a final appeal following a hazing incident.

The U.S. Army has agreed to put off the planned closure of Reserve Officers Training Corps programs at three Tennessee universities.

Republican U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker said yesterday the delay will provide time to show the programs can meet the Army's needs.

The Army is ending 13 officer training programs nationwide, including the ROTC program at the University of Tennessee at Martin. 

Active learning online is a buzz phrase for getting faculty lectures to students before they come to class, so the class can be an engagement center for students asking about lectures they've already heard, and presumably studied.  University of Tennessee at Martin instructional technology designer Harriette Spiegel is involved in an ECHO 360 webinar open to all, free, this Thursday at 1 p.m.  It is targeted specifically to supporting STEM classrooms. The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees have approved a 6% instate tuition increase for its Martin campus. Tuition and fees will cost undergraduate students an additional $229 per semester and graduate students an additional $265. 

Three Former UTM Football Players Face Robbery, Kidnapping Charges

Three former University of Tennessee at Martin football players face robbery and kidnapping charges. Linebacker Cortez Bowen was removed from the team after he and former players Richard Taylor and Jeremy Anderson allegedly robbed and kidnapped two UTM students at gunpoint earlier this month. A 17-year-old juvenile is also charged in the incident.

University of Tennessee at Martin students will pay six percent more for their tuition next year. The UT Board of Trustees approved the increase at their annual meeting in Knoxville.
