Following a uranium hexafluoride leak Sunday night at the Metropolis, Illinois Honeywell facility, United Steelworkers Local 7-669 officials allege the incident stems from equipment improperly installed by outside contractors, work they say was previously done in-house by their members.

United Steelworkers Local 7-669 officials say they’re concerned by the arrival this morning of salaried and contract employees during contract talks at Honeywell’s Metropolis facility.

Officials at Honeywell’s Metropolis plant will lay off more than 220 employees while the company continues to evaluate a series of upgrades to prepare for extreme natural disasters. The plant has been temporarily shut down since late May.
