Kentucky Republicans Beef Up Campaign Army for U.S. Senate Race; Democrats on Standby

Senator Mitch McConnell's next election is a year and a half away…and he doesn't have a serious opponent. But this hasn't stopped him from amassing significant money and personnel for his re-election. 

Every week, new field directors, political staff and fundraisers join the effort to re-elect McConnell. But while they have the same goal, they don't have the same boss. Some of the staffers work for McConnell's campaign. Others for the Republican Party of Kentucky. And others work for SuperPACs.

McConnell To Give Murray State Commencement

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell will deliver Murray State's Spring commencement address on May 11th at MSU's CFSB Center.  Around 1,400 Murray State students  are expected to graduate. McConnell’s will be one of two nationally known political figures giving commencement speeches in Kentucky this May. Last week Eastern Kentucky University announced it will host First Lady Michelle Obama.

One of Two Men Implicated in McConnell Recording Starts Legal Fund

Curtis Morrison, one of two Democratic activists implicated in recording a campaign strategy session of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, is starting a legal defense fund. 

Morrison tweeted out a link to the gofundme.com page Monday afternoon. The website lists a $10,000 goal.

Morrison does not say whether he was behind the recording. He says he has been working with the FBI on that matter. Morrison could not be reached for comment.

Kentucky PAC Recording of Sen. McConnell Stirs Controversy

Yesterday, WFPL News reported that Progress Kentucky, a liberal Super PAC, was behind the secret recording of a recent campaign strategy session between Senator Mitch McConnell and his re-election team.  The story has exploded, and it's the second time Progress Kentucky has drawn national headlines. And as Kentucky Public Radio's Gabe Bullard reports, neither incident has done the group any favors.

McConnell on proposed gun control bill

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell says a gun control proposal from New York Democrat Charles Schumer takes the wrong approach. The Kentucky Republican says Schumer wants to make it a federal crime, punishable by up to five years in prison, for a person not to report a lost or stolen gun within 24 hours. McConnell calls Schumer’s bill a “clear overreach” that will punish law-abiding friends, neighbors and families.

The attorney for the director of a liberal Kentucky political fundraising group says his client is cooperating with an FBI investigation into a secret recording of a campaign meeting held by U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. That recording was leaked to Mother Jones magazine.

Source: Progress Kentucky Behind Mitch McConnell Campaign Recording

A secret recording of a campaign strategy session between U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and his advisors was taped by leaders of the Progress Kentucky super PAC, says a longtime local Democratic operative.

Mother Jones Magazine released the tape this week. The meeting itself took place on Feb. 2.

McConnell Says Office Was Bugged

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has asked the FBI to find out who placed a recording device in his Louisville campaign office and recorded a private meeting held on February 2nd.   That recording was of Republican McConnell and his aides strategizing about potential democratic opponents in next year’s election. A transcript of the discussion was published today in Mother Jones magazine and the senator’s aides are heard talking about research into actress Ashley Judd’s religion and mental health. At the time, Judd was considering a challenge to McConnell.

Poll: McConnell in Close Races With Potential Opponents

A new poll shows Sen. Mitch McConnell with a precarious lead over potential Democratic challengers.

The survey from Public Policy Polling shows McConnell with a four point lead over Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes—45 to 41—and a five point lead over former Congressman Ben Chandler.

Gun Control Group Continues Ad Campaign Against Mitch McConnell

Progressive Change Campaign Committee has launched a new ad criticizing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell over proposed gun control measures.

This is the second spot by the group to target McConnell, and like the previous ad it features a Kentucky gun owner and military veteran who supports a ban on assault weapons.
